Where does your team's infrastructure inventory stand? 20 questions and you'll know.

The CMDB Maturity Scorecard is a free, 20-question self-assessment of your team's CMDB, the database that shows what's running in your environment and what depends on what. It takes about 10 minutes, and your results arrive by email: where your team stands on the 5 levels of the classic Capability Maturity Model (CMM), and what a realistic next step looks like from there.

What the scorecard gives you

  • A level and a score. What used to take a long explanation now fits in one level and one number: where your inventory stands.

  • Five areas, one at a time. Scope and data model, data intake and freshness, discovery and automation, data quality and governance, reporting and use. As you fill it out, you'll see which one is holding you back the most.

  • A guide to the next level. Your results come with the Results Guide (PDF): what your level means in practice, and the concrete steps that take you one level up, sized for a team of 1–5 people.

  • No CMDB tool required. Built for IT teams of 1–5 people, it doesn't assume you have any system in place. If your inventory lives in Excel or in two colleagues' heads today, that's as valid a starting point as any.

For a small team, level 1 or 2 is the typical starting point, and the scorecard shows you the next level from there. Nobody is going to hold you to level 5.

I'm Tamás Gellai. I built a production CMDB at a large enterprise, end to end, and I run it to this day: from designing the data model, through the data intake pipelines, the reports built from normalized data, and automated discovery, to interactive visualization and the operational tools that run on top of the CMDB. As the person running it, I also know the failure modes: aging data, the trust that goes out the door with it, the edge cases in discovery. As a technical contributor, I took part in CMDB maturity assessments. I'm now turning that experience into a course on how to build your own CMDB.
